Gateway Gardens is a showcase project in many aspects: One day, 25,000 ultra-modern workplaces from a wide variety of sectors will find a home here on 35ha of land, directly at the gates of Frankfurt Airport. Currently, more than 70 companies with around 6,500 employees are already located here, contributing to the extraordinary character of the quarter, implementing their innovative visions in the green surroundings of Gateway Gardens and benefiting from the unique connection to national and international transport routes by road, rail and air.

The land of opportunity – right in the middle of the Rhine-Main area: the Rhine-Main Air Base was a booming city for the residents. And an open-air museum for everyone else. Where else could you experience the American way of life so close? The effects can still be felt in Frankfurt today. Especially in culture, as the former air base is regarded as a birthplace of Frankfurt’s lively hip-hop scene. Little America for some people – Gateway to Europe for others!
After 1954, today’s Quartier was the largest US Air Force base outside the United States. The Air Force stationing left its mark not only on Frankfurt Airport, but also influenced cultural developments in the entire Rhine-Main region. For while Frankfurt became the gateway to Europe for the GIs, the air base was a gateway to the exciting world of high society in the USA for Frankfurt citizens.
Until 2005, the Rhine-Main Air Base was the home of numerous American families. In order not to suffer too much homesickness far from their homes, the air base delighted its residents with numerous comforts that no American suburb should be without. In addition to facilities such as a school, church and library, the stationed soldiers and their families enjoyed American hairdressers and barber shops, could shop in the PX for the usual things from the USA or watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters in the cinema with salty popcorn. In this way, a large community was formed here which also made the American spirit tangible for the German neighbors from the Rhine-Main area!
There is not much left that indicates the history of the site. The residential buildings, the barracks and the public buildings are gone. Instead, the connection to the major transport arteries of Germany and Central Europe, the site’s own S-Bahn station and the modern buildings that house hotels, restaurants, commercial space and, of course, offices are new. A new community is growing here which will add another exciting chapter to the area.
